how-to: start a wine club

It’s no secret that I love wine; red, white or sparkling. I’m your girl. While this might be true for most women, what do my close friends and I do so we have an excuse to drink more of it more often? Start a wine club, naturally.

I posted from time to time on instagram about our tasting journeys throughout 2013 but nothing too in depth. It’s for fun – sure, I love learning about fine wine especially after my Napa trip (can I go back now please?), but wine club is another excuse to have scheduled gossip sessions over delicious flights and cheese + charcuterie boards.

Now, who can argue with that?

Guide to Starting Your Own Club

1. Think of a fun name.

We like to call ourselves “District Vines” (or #DV) because well, we all live in the District aka your nation’s capital. We call our meetings; “tastings”.

2. Keep it small.

We have 4 “founders” and each month, we each invite one new guest to join us so there are always 8 ladies tasting. Plus, it’s hard to make a reservation for groups larger than this (and hard to coordinate schedules..more on that later). We also make it a point to invite new friends, coworkers and people that may not know one another otherwise. At least we’ll have one thing in common; love of wine, right?

3. Take turns playing “hostesses”.

Every month, one of the founders is in charge of “hosting” wine club. This simply means picking the wine bar or restaurant (no repeats), arranging for reservations or special accommodations. Some spots love the idea of our wine club and will go out of their way to make the evening extra special. While we try to stick to places that offer “flights” of wine; it’s not always necessary and some venues are happy to whip some up on the spot! This could also mean “hosting” at your own home with a specific theme in mind. For example, I could chose “Spanish Wines” and everyone shows up with a bottle to taste and sip on throughout the night.

4. Plan trips.

What is exciting about our club is that new guests are included each month and now that it’s over a year old, we’ve acquired quite a alumni list. So, with this in mind, we have decided to plan 2 yearly vineyard trips to nearby wineries and invite all previous guests to join. These will take place in the summer and fall and allow us to switch it up a bit on an excursion.

5. Schedule tastings in advance.

As you can imagine, when you have founding members that have anything-but-9-to-5 jobs, super type A personalities, beaus to attend to and 50 other organizations they’re involved with; finding time to get together even ONCE a month is a challenge. So for 2014 – we all got together and picked out dates for the rest of the year (all on Mondays). No excuses. No dream guy or mani-pedi date is allowed to trump wine club this year. We’ll see how this goes…

6. Have fun.

Sure, you might learn a thing or two but what’s truly important is the company. Oh and if you do have a date afterward; you might want to bring along a mini toothbrush (#wineteeth).

Cheers!

tablescape tuesday: 2014 inspiration

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted a Tablescape Tuesday and since this upcoming year is sure to be packed full of hosting, I think it’ time! I have a few exciting events and collaborations on the horizon from engagement parties, baby showers and brunches to dinner parties, candy bars and blogger events (details coming soon!). With that being said, I am constantly brainstorming, sourcing and looking for new ideas based on specific themes and seasons. Of course, I use online sources like Pinterest, but long before the days of “pinning” I relied on magazines, books and my favorite;  in-store shopping –  which still remains my favorite way to create a table.

I find that this normally sparks the creativity behind each event I do – sometimes it comes from one piece I buy or one idea and I build everything else around that. Other times, like with Christmas, the overall look is easier to come up with.  I can be super picky so there is always a lot of “editing” involved and pulling from different ideas but adding my own spin to it is equally as important.

Nonetheless, here a few ideas I’ve found recently that I hope to draw inspiration from this upcoming year.

Which one do you like best?

pop, fizz, clink with tiny prints

Sometimes planning a New Year’s Eve party can be a little overwhelming with unnecessary pressures if you’re playing hostess. I’ve teamed up with Tiny Prints this week to bring you this post for an easy and fun way to serve your bubbly this New Year’s!

What You’ll Need:

The mini bottles are an alternative to serving bubbly out of traditional champagne glasses. Not only does this mean every guests gets his or her own bottle but you also don’t have to worry about buying extra glasses for the evening.

Tiny Print gift tags are perfect to tie on each bottle – you can add your own hand written message or customized them online. I did both! I think these also make creative New Year’s gifts for friends and family even if you’re not hosting a party on the 31st.

The best part? The sparklers, of course. Tie a sparkler to each bottle and then your guests will not only toast to 2014 at midnight but also enjoy a little fun and sparkle too.

The straws can be used once the bottles are popped and by displaying them in champagne glasses, this will tie the entire NYE theme together.

As you already know, this year I decided to forgo Christmas cards and instead mail New Year’s Cards to my list (also pictured here). The custom “Pop Fizz Clink” design matches the gift tags and if you’re hosting, you can also have a card ready for each guest to leave with or send later on via snailmail.

Hopefully this inspired you to ring in 2014 as the hostess with the mostest!

P.S. Don’t forget to check out Tiny Prints for cards and other customized products!

Merry Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas from Hosting & Toasting!

As the oldest of 4, with my youngest sister being only 9, it’s safe to say that Santa visited us last night and enjoyed red wine and cheese on his stop (little little sister’s idea, not mine).

Whether you’re enjoying a “White Christmas” today or far from it (like myself down here in Florida), I hope your day is spent with those you love most!

Wishing you and yours a wonderful holiday! Thank you for reading!

favorite things party with nico and lala

Last night I hosted my annual “favorite things” party & gift exchange with the help of Nico and Lala. If you read my holiday tips & tricks post, I alluded to this party there as well as showed off the adorable invitations the ladies whipped up for me! This type of gift exchange is similar to a “secret Santa” except you bring along one of your favorite things aka it’s like shopping for yourself.

There were lots of bows, striped straws and naturally, toasting involved in last night’s festivities. Nico and Lala made my vision come to life with the design and party swag for us all. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves and more party details below.

The signature drink for the night was a little cocktail I created and appropriately named.

CHRISTMAS CHEER:

  • White Wine or Bubbly (up to you how heavy the pour)
  • Splash of cranberry juice
  • Splash of sprite + blood orange soda
  • Garnish with fresh rosemary & cranberries

To each champagne glass, I attached a number and passed out drinks upon friends’ arrival. These numbers were later used to help determine the order of the present picking…and stealing.

To accompany full glasses of Christmas cheer, I also served a few signature homemade desserts & salty snacks: red velvet mini cupcakes, peppermint marshmallow cheesecake bars, hand dipped chocolate festive pretzels and gingerbread truffles. Oh yes and a cheese board for yours truly.  (Email me for the recipes!)

After we consumed far too many sweets, the gift exchange began from a pile of very sought after “favorite things”.

 GIFT EXCHANGE RULES:

1. A gift can only be “stolen” 4 times (there were 20-something of us, normally this is just 3).

2. You can’t steal back a gift or go home with your own.

3. Whoever picks first, can go again at the end.

What was my favorite thing? A 2014 Nico and Lala desktop calendar, of course.

(The Unofficial “Blogger Couch” with Heather of Pineapples & Pearls, Jenna of District Delights, Lacey of A Lacey Perspective & Cathy of Poor Little It Girl)

After the exchange, I brewed up some hot hot chocolate and we each made our own customized drinks from the “bar”.

(Cathy with her masterpiece of a hot chocolate.)

Probably not too surprising if you follow me on instagram, but one of my other favorite things is homemade hot chocolate. I wrapped up a single serving for everyone to take home complete with marshmallows & candy canes. These served as the party favors for the evening, however, I think I might be the only person past the age of 8 that still enjoys a good party favor.

Follow along on instagram for more photos from the night with the below ##.

Special thank you again to Nico and Lala for designing and providing all the fun party swag. If you’re hosting a birthday, baby shower, bachelorette weekend or getting married, these ladies should be your go-to! Plus, they have adorable stationery and other fun products.

Stay tuned tomorrow for the start of a new series + a DIY Ornament idea!
