how-to: macarons + mimosas

When you first hear “macarons + mimosas”, you might think springtime, bridal showers or even Easter brunch. Now those are all quite appropriate occasions to indulge in macarons and sip on mimosas, but may I suggest a fall spin?  I did just that this past weekend at the Dagne Dover event I hosted at Urban Chic and it worked just as well so I had to share with you below.

Apple Cider Mimosas

These are similar to the Apple Cider Bourbon Mimosas I posted earlier this season (sans the bourbon and fancy garnishes).

Ingredients:

  • 2 parts Bubbly
  • 1 part Apple Cider (fresh or store bought)
  • Dash of Cinnamon
  • Few pinches of Sugar
  • Orange Juice (for the rim)

Directions:

This cocktail mix is all about the taste and there are no formal measurements involved (read: easy).

  1. Dip the rim of the glass in a bowl of OJ and then into the cinnamon sugar mixture.
  2. Fill each glass 3/4 full of champagne (more or less, up to you!)
  3. Add a splash of apple cider.
  4. Voila!

Fall Macarons

For this occasion, Macaron Bee was sweet enough to send some treats our way to enjoy. However, whether you’re picking out flavors or making your own, chose ones with fall flavors in mind. We had pumpkin spice and raspberry macarons which were also orange and pink to match the overall color scheme of the day.

P.S. Pumpkin Spice Macarons = mini pumpkin pies, delish!

The Details:

As you might of guessed, this is my favorite part. You can find delicious recipes for drinks but it’s really the details that can leave a lasting impression on your guests while pulling it all together. Below are a few tips that I used for the day but they really can be applied to any celebration you host to make your guests feel that much more special. Oh and the pretty presentation doesn’t hurt either.

1. Presentation + Containers: I used glass carafes for the bubbly and apple cider and set up a mimosa bar complete with a cinnamon + sugar in glass bowls. Simple things like pouring the champagne out of its bottle and apple cider out of the pot (or store bought container) make it so much more pleasing to look at. I also used a copper ice bucket for waters, this gold serving tray for the drinks, mason jars for straws and a tiered stand for the macarons.

2. Party Supplies + Colors: If you keep your color scheme simple (1-2 colors, 3 at most), it makes purchasing supplies easier too. I chose pink and orange with accents of gold for this day. It was bright and playful but also tied in the drinks and macaron colors. For party supplies, pick items with your theme in mind too. Just like with apparel, prints + pattern mixing is totally appropriate. I chose pink polka dot cocktail napkins and used orange striped paper straws from my fave: Swoozies (it’s safe to assume I have used just about every color of these now).

3. Labels: Labeling items on display is also a great way to add a little something more to any presentation. This can go beyond placecards  on dining tables and buffet items. I tied on gift tags that read “cheers” and “cider” to each of the carafes on the mimosa bar. I also used chalkboard labels for my sugar container.

3. Finishing Touches: Last but certainly not least, the “finishing touches”. Add candles (I used a pumpkin spice one), fresh flowers (peonies) and bows around carafes, mason jars and wherever deems appropriate.  At the last minute for this occasion, I decided to purchase mini sparking san pellegrinos. I play by the rule that even when everything is checked off my list, there is normally one last detail left that might of slipped my mind. In this case, it was the waters. This is the type of detail that you might not think of at first but one that is greatly appreciated later by guests and makes sure nothing is left unnoticed.

So before we move full swing force ahead in the holiday posts, here is one last theme that is fitting for celebrating a fall birthday,  hosting a book club or shower, brunch with the girls or “just because”. Try it out! Let me know how you decide to use it!

tuckernuck holiday shop opening!

Tuckernuck has easily become one of my favorite retailers – their all-American style with brands from Barbour to Britt Ryan & Elizabeth McKay make it a one stop shop for those that appreciate classic pieces. This is also why I am uber exited that they will be having a PopUp Shop over the holidays this year. And guess what? THIS Thursday, I am a co-host for their Holiday Store Opening (along with Necessary & Proper, Society Social, Read Wall, zestt & Chubbies) – so if you’re in the DC area, please stop by Georgetown for some seasonal beverages and styling!

Here are few of the latest pieces I’m loving on Tuckernuck (#tuckernucking).

southern blog society fall meetup

This past weekend, I spent my Saturday with the Virginia + DC ladies of the Southern Blog Society. We headed out to Middleburg, Virginia via Reston Limo and were hosted by the fabulous staff at Greenhill Winery & Vineyards.

{Julie of Julie Leah}

We sipped on wine around a fire and snapped more than enough photos despite our windblown locks. I guess that’s what happens when you put a bunch of fashion and lifestyle bloggers on a limo bus and ship them out of the city – instagrams for days. Overall, we enjoyed a windy, yet lovely fall afternoon in the country.

{Cathy of Poor Little It Girl}

Southern Blog Society meet ups are always a delight and it’s so nice to see blogger friends and meet new faces. Special thank you to Julie and Cathy for organizing the afternoon.

the neat life.

One of my favorite rooms in my house is the kitchen. Sure, the dining room and living room are great for entertaining but every single time I host friends, EVERYONE always ends up in the kitchen. It really does have a lot of character; exposed brick walls, patriotic touches (a la Pottery Barn), double ovens and a charming little view of our back patio. However, this is also why I am so embarrassed to say that before the lovely ladies of Neat Method DC took over my kitchen, it was quite a mess.

Neat Method is a lifestyle service that specializes is professional organizing with a fun and “neat” take on it. One of my sorority sisters, Raelynn and her good friend, Catherine, brought the San Francisco/Chicago based company to DC recently – and thank goodness for that.

{Raelynn & Catherine of Neat Method DC}

Now, before I go any further I must add that I’ve always considered myself to be quite organized and Type A+ when it comes to the home, office or even back in school. But when you combine three girls and all their items plus my roomates and I’s love for koozies, custom stadium cups, cupcake liners and the like, you end up with one big mess. I still remember the moment when I was getting ready for a party, opened the “pantry” and a bottle of olive oil came tumbling down all over me, the counters and my new dress. Whoops! It might of been then that I knew we needed this dynamic duo to come to the rescue and force us to de-clutter, stay organized (which I am proud to say we have!) and throw away the many duplicates (really, no one needs 3 can openers).

 Raelynn and Catherine spent a few days organizing our kitchen, entertaining bar, all my parties supplies and even our storage closet full of holiday decorations and winter coats. I think they were pretty much sick of me all my striped straws and spices. They labeled, bought new items and made our lives 1000x easier. They also made me vow to never buy another tervis tumbler or cocktail napkin again.

Shocker: this promise was quickly broken.

Below is a look at a few before (don’t JUDGE) and afters of their work! Neat Method is a wonderful service perfect for moves, closets, offices and even gifts. These two will organize just about anything and with a smile + awesome beats on along the way.

P.S. those stadium cups below..go 4 rows back (#iwishiwaskidding).

Be sure to follow Neat Method along on instagram and the DC gals on twitter (#theneatlife). Even if you can’t or don’t want someone to organize your things –  their blog can provide you with helpful tips (#tiptuesdays) each week to incorporate in your everyday life – including travel advice (I desperately needed this!)

Hopefully this inspires you to live a little more neat and begin to de-clutter this fall. My next project…the closet. Wish me luck!

macarons & mimosas: dagne dover trunk show

I have some exciting news! H&T will be co-hosting a great event NEXT weekend in DC with Dagne Dover handbags & PopInShop. My friend Carly of The College Prepster first introduced me to Dagne Dover a few months ago. She, too, is a big fan!

(Watch the video below and you’ll see WHY we love the totes so much).

Rightfully so, Dagne Dover has quickly become one of my favorite handbag brands – especially the totes for the work day or for travel. They are not only organized, but pleasing to the eye too. Not to mention, they are the exact opposite of a “bottomless pit” that so many other totes we know and love are. The clutch + wallet fit right in the totes too.

{Tote in Onyx}

So please join me next weekend in Georgetown for Macarons & Mimosas!

RSVP HERE and invite your friends!

You will also receive 20% OFF all full-priced items at Urban Chic plus amazing giftbags – this is a great time to start searching for those holi-dresses! And in true #hostingandtoasting fashion, we will be serving Pumpkin Spice Macarons courtesy of Macaron Bee + Apple Cider Mimosas by yours truly.

Abbey from District Dressup is hosting this great event with me. She was recently featured in Glamour and is quite the fashionista.  If you live in the DC area or have friends that do, I hope you’ll stop by and pass along!  We would both love to meet you over a macaron and mimosa!
