ASK BAC: Top 15 Hosting Items

I often get asked by friends and readers about, (no shock here), “hosting”, entertaining and general advice when it comes to party planning, gifts and the like. Some of the most common questions revolve around tips, must-have items that you can use over and over and of course, budgeting.

Because of this, I have decided to start posting commonly asked questions in a little “Ask BAC” format. So if you have questions – please send them my way ([email protected])! I will pick frequently asked ones and post about them each month.

First up, I know that entertaining as a whole can be a little intimidating. You may not be the best chef (neither am I!), have the creative mind of a Pinterest board or have an apartment the size OF a dining room table instead of an apartment WITH one. So,  I thought I would share with you my top 15 items to have for beginners (in no particular order).

1. An Apron – This one is pretty much a no-brainer, however, if you don’t fully know why, you can read more about my adventures HERE. Below are a few I am loving.

2. Matching Set of Wine Glasses & Flutes (suggested for 8) – You will break one or two (or three if you’re me) – you should always have a set for a number you’re comfortable entertaining for plus a few extra. 8 is a good number to start.

3. Vases – Whether it be mason jars or glass ones that came with your Valentine’s Day delivery, hold on to vases. Also, don’t be afraid to get creative with it and use items that aren’t ordinarily a “vase” (glass carafes work too – see below).

4. Serving Tray or Large Dish -This is pretty self explanatory but it’s good to have one or two of these for drinks or menu items if you’re hosting a dinner. I’d also recommend investing in a custom lucite tray. I love my large one below custom from Pretty Smitten.

5. Matching Set of White Plates –  The same rule applies for these as for the glasses (although you’re probably less likely to break these).

6. A Favorite Cookbook, an app on your phone or the number of a good restaurant – Everyone needs a little guidance in the kitchen.

7. Oven Mitts – Don’t get burned (a few faves below).

8. Tealight Candles and Matches (or a lighter in my case) – I think non-scented works best for dinner tables and around the house. You can light these and put them in jars or candle holders. Also, I am afraid of matches (yep, I wish I could use cute ones like these), so I rely on a candle lighter.

9. Ice Bucket – Perfect for chilling wine, bubbly, beers or water – I have a few of these in different sizes in silver.

10. A Universal Tablecloth – Everyone needs a go-to tablecloth that can use on multiple occasions. No matter what size, be sure to have something that fits your table and goes with everything. It should also be machine washable.

11. Your Own Signature Dish – This must be your go-to when cooking for friends or serving appetizers too. Something that is your no-fail dish that’s also a hit among guests. For me, I make a mean risotto, among others.

12. A Healthy Sense of Humor – May I remind you WHY again?

13. Grace Under Pressure – As an event planner, this is also one of the most important parts of my job. It’s also something to maintain when hosting and entertaining for others. No one wants to see the person in charge flip out or in this case, the person, hosting, have a melt down.

14. A Carafe – A WHAT? A carafe is an open-topped glass flask typically used for serving wine or water. You can also use for juice bars, mimosas and yes, as a vase.  I have a few of these in my cabinets and they’re super affordable too ($4.99 at World Market).

15. Bottle of Bubbly – If all else fails, you should know how to put this one to good use. Cheers!

When Irish Eyes are Gluten Free

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

When I was growing up, I had a strong dislike for the little Irish Blessings that scattered across my fair-skinned face…also known as freckles. In an effort to make me feel better, my dad told me they were “angel kisses”. However, there was one day a year when I LOVED my freckle face and that day was March 17th. I woke up in the morning to green milk in my cereal and green freckles on my face – a la a leprechaun, of course.

This is a family tradition that still takes place every March 17th complete with corned beef and cabbage plus my grandmother’s homemade Irish soda bread for dinner. Delish!

I, too,  keep the tradition alive now that I live on my own with green milk in our fridge  (although I think the leprechaun realizes I can’t go to work with “green freckles” so those no longer appear across my cheeks as funny as that would be).

This weekend, I celebrated a little of my Irish heritage by whipping up some new recipes. I haven’t been able to enjoy Irish soda bread in a few years (due to my gluten allergy) so I finally decided to perfect my own gluten free version. I looked at many recipes online and couldn’t quite find one I liked so I took a few, combined, substituted and made my own (fingers crossed – it worked!). I also wanted to be able to make them into muffins so I could grab and go in the morning or with dinner.

I’m the first to admit that gluten-free bread recipes are often terrible (I avoid GF breads normally at all costs because of this) but these muffins are pretty darn good and the raisins add just the perfect amount of sweetness. Serve with butter or jam and you’re all set!

BAC GF Irish Soda Muffins:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of Pamela’s Gluten Free Flour/Baking Mix
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon of sea salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup of vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup of buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon of mayo
  • 1/2 teaspoon of almond extract
  • 1 cup of raisins

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  • Combine all dry ingredients in a bowl and whisk.
  • Add in beaten eggs, oil, mayo, buttermilk and almond extract and mix (batter will be thick).
  • Stir in raisins and spoon into 12 muffin tins.
  • Bake for 21 minutes.

For dessert on Sunday evening, I also made Irish Cream Milkshakes for my roomate and I. This recipe is super easy and if you really want to get into the “Irish spirit” and kick it up a notch – add in some #boozy Bailey’s!

BAC Irish Cream Milkshakes

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of GREEN skim milk
  • 2 cups of light vanilla ice cream
  • few splashes of irish cream creamer
  • whipped cream
  • green sprinkles
  • festive straws & milk bottles (optional)

Directions:

  • Blend together milk, ice cream and creamer.
  • Top with whipped cream and sprinkles.
  • Enjoy!

Thankfully, I’ve since learned to embrace my freckles and auburn hair that appear every summer.

Recap: H&T with The College Prepster

First and foremost, apologies for the lack of posts this past week – I was super busy getting everything ready for The College Prepster event and time got the best of me!

Today’s post is a recap of the Meet & Greet that I hosted this past weekend for my friend, Carly. I kept the theme simple and well, preppy…with lots of navy and pink along the way. I also had “Live Your Dreams” pencils made for party favors (TCP motto).

We had over 200+ girls and 2 guys (ha!) join us to meet Carly. Everyone sipped on illy coffee (in pink cups), hot chocolate and smoothies while waiting in line for insta-pics. They also indulged in the most adorable silhouette & bow sugar cookies I’ve ever seen (#coffeeandcookies). It was so nice to meet everyone!

It was also so fun to have Carly back in town from NYC.  We started our day with a blogger blowout date at Drybar Georgetown (thank you again to the lovely team there for the beautiful blowouts and curls! – see my instagram for some “behind the blogger scenes”).  Afterward, we frolicked down the street to the adorable Patisserie Poupon to set up for the event.

Thank you again to Nico and Lala for all the fun party swag, Monumental Sweets for the cookies, Patisserie Poupon for hosting us at the coffee bar and UrbanStems for providing the gorgeous custom florals for the afternoon (see instagram for more photos of those beauties!).

Oh and I must say, Carly has some of the best-dressed readers around!

P.S. – If you don’t live in DC and are a fan of The College Prepster too – rumor has it that Carly and I might just be taking this show on the road (coming to a city near you soon!) so stay tuned for more updates this Spring!

an apron & a sense of humor

Happy Friday!

I thought I would take some time to share with you a few “hosting horror stories” of mine (and hopefully make you laugh along the way). Every time I entertain at home, everything may LOOK “picture perfect” on instagram but we all know that “real life” is anything BUT.

I often joke that there is my “blog life” vs. my “real life” and I am sure many other bloggers can relate to this. H&T represents me pretty much to a tee – but it’s censored too – so today, I’m pulling away from the censorship a bit and sharing a few “now-funny” stories that hopefully you can relate to. These should also reassure you that while I may go a little overboard from time to time – my entertaining is not always perfect and I hope H&T inspires you to entertain even if it’s “not your thing”.

Before I begin the horror stories, might I suggest that the most important item you can own when hosting is an apron  – this also goes hand-in-hand with a sense of humor (you’ll see why later).

You might feel like a 1950s housewife or french maid for that matter, BUT aprons are absolutely necessary when running around the kitchen no matter how ridiculous your roomates/bffs/beau might think you look. These are especially important to throw on when you’re already dressed for the party – no one wants sauce or booze on your new dress or summer whites, right?

A sense of humor is also necessary because if your luck is anything like mine, something will inevitably go “wrong”. After much entertaining in my home, this is a funny truth I’ve just come to accept. Normally when something goes “wrong” in my hosting adventures, it has to do with my clumsiness or being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Alas, here are my top 3 horror stories of the moment.

#1.  My 25th Birthday Party with Shamu

This was an afternoon wine tasting party that a few of my BFFs graciously helped me host. While the party consisted of 40+ of my closest GFs who never held an empty wine glass, more pink and green than Lilly herself owned and my favorite surprise cake to date – it got off to a rocky start.

]

I had just purchased a new glass drink dispenser and while were early morning mixing the punch – the dispenser took a turn for the worse. There I was, halfway ready (hair still wet), stirring the drink and the next thing I realize, our entire kitchen in covered in girly punch, glass in the garbage disposal and one not-so-happy-camper (read: ME). I am still not even sure what happened but that dispenser has forever earned the name “Shamu” because the only way to describe the accident is referring to the killer whale himself jumping out of his Sea World home through the glass.

Luckily, for the most part, the kitchen counters were clear of party favor items but I stood there in shock – looked at my friends and said “no one ever make fun of me again for getting ready too early”, grabbed my keys and drove back to VA to return it. I won’t say where I purchased the dispenser because I have not had a problem since then BUT I will say that they gave me a brand new one and I am still nervous every time it is put to use. Lessons learned? Prep early so you still have time to run back to the liquor store when all your ingredients end up on the floor and all over you. Oh yes, and a wear an apron.

#2.  Summer Cookout Cabinets

Before my BFF moved out on her own (#hategrowingup), we used to throw a summer cookout each year consisting of Burgers, Beats & Booze (yes, that’s what we called it). It was quite fun and often too crowded but a tradition we maintained…even if our house smelled like burgers for a month after and we had to beg guy friends/boyfriends to help with the keg and grill for 100 of our closest friends (thanks boys!).

First, I might say that this was prior to Neat Method taking over my kitchen so the cabinets were a bit of a mess (read more on that HERE). I was completely ready in my red sundress, wedges, face on and curls in tact (NOT wearing an apron as luck would have it). I opened the pantry cabinets for God knows what and BOOM – a full bottle of olive oil broke all over me, my dress and the kitchen. Glass + olive oil is not exactly the best combination (not to mention that it’s expensive). Lessons learned? Organize your cabinets AND wear an apron.

#3. End of Summer Shrimp Boil Boozy Shakes

The last of my recent horror stories was at my End of Summer Summer Shrimp Boil (longest name ever, I’m aware). Aside from the fact that I didn’t think about how I would feasibly drain the GIGANTIC & HEAVY pot of shrimp, corn and potatoes (thankfully my roomate Courtney came to the rescue) – this evening did almost go off without any glitches, almost.

The real incident was the end of the evening where my clumsiness came into play (and perhaps one too many glasses of yes-you-guessed-it-vino didn’t help either). I was preparing dessert (Key Lime Pie Boozy Shakes), and while the shakes might of looked “instagram ready”; they caused quite a ruckus once again in my invincible kitchen.

I didn’t realize that my blender container failed to have the bottom attached or to put it simply; wasn’t put on correctly. Therefore, what I thought was a little “leak” (oh hi, milk all over my counters) turned out to be the exact opposite. When I turned the blender on..well, there went the first batch of boozy shakes – spraying all over me and the counter. This time, I was wearing an apron (guess I learned this lesson by now) and my new white dress was spared. Second lesson learned? Triple check the blender before hitting “pulse”.

That’s all the hosting horror stories I have for now, but I will be sure to make a point (if y’all enjoy these?) to share more of them as they come – because Lord knows I will have them. I guess the important thing is that I can laugh about them now. Oh and nothing went horribly wrong at Pizza & Prosecco so perhaps my luck is changing?

Have a great weekend!

Show Some Love

Happy Valentine’s Day!

After posts about candy bars and gift guides, I wanted to share with you a few things that are a little different on this day filled with over-priced roses, unreasonable expectations and girls night outs.

#1. EverydayHero has put together a little something to bring the true meaning of Valentine’s Day back into the holiday; LOVE – love for the people you care most about and love for the nonprofits or charities that you hold near and dear.

They are handing out hearts similar to the ones below in places like San Francisco and New York to “show some love”. There is a blank line where you can fill out the charity/nonprofit or person you want to show love for.

My favorite charities are below with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – this was also my sorority’s philanthropy and continues to be one of my favorites to support & Cycle for Survival – an indoor cycling event that I’ve become involved with for the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

You can learn more about this project HERE, including the opportunity to have EverydayHero donate money to the charity of your choice.

I have included some blank ones too and I hope you’ll also share your photos and stories of the ways you’re showing love for others on FacebookInstagram, and Twitter. Tag EverydayHeroUS, and use the hashtag #ShowSomeLove.

#2. Recently I learned about a new startup company in the DC area call UrbanStems. For those that love receiving fresh flowers and sending them (like myself), this idea could not be more genius. They offer gorgeous hand-crafted bouquets delivered anywhere in DC for just $35! They are all freshly cut, delivered within an hour or two and at any time or day you’d like.

So for those of you that live in DC or have a loved one that does – if you need a last minute Valentine delivery, use HELLODC5 for $5 off!

Below is the gorgeous bouquet that UrbanStems was so sweet to surprise me with last week (they are still beautiful one week later)!

#3. My favorite song, “You Got What I Need” by Joshua Radin. I love love this version and could not think of a better day to share it AND no music selection of mine would be complete without cheesy country music so “Get Me Some of That” by Thomas Rhett (can you believe he is only 23?) is also below – I think it’s pretty adorable.  Enjoy!

Have a wonderful weekend!
